The Web Guide feature is part of Google’s Search Labs experiments, a platform where users can opt into experimental features to test new ideas. These experiments offer flexibility, allowing users to enable or disable them at any time. Among the notable experiments are AI Mode, Notebook LM, and the filmmaking tool Flow, each contributing to a broader understanding of AI’s potential in search.

At the core of the Web Guide feature is Gemini, a powerful AI model that interprets search queries with greater depth, linking to content that might otherwise be overlooked. This approach is especially beneficial for open-ended queries like ‘how to solo travel in Japan’ or complex questions such as ‘What are the best tools for maintaining close relationships across time zones?’

By leveraging a variation of the fan-out technique already used in AI Mode, Google’s Web Guide groups search results into thematic sections. For instance, a query about solo travel might yield categories like comprehensive guides, safety tips, and personal experiences, each offering a distinct perspective on the topic.

Initially available to users who opt in, the Web Guide experiment will reorganize search results within the Web tab, with plans to expand to the ‘All’ tab and beyond. Users can easily switch back to standard results as desired, ensuring a versatile and user-friendly experience.
