OpenAI Introduces Pulse: Personalized Reports for ChatGPT Users

OpenAI has launched an innovative feature within ChatGPT called Pulse, designed to deliver personalized reports to users effortlessly. This new addition aims to transform ChatGPT from a reactive chatbot into a proactive digital assistant, encouraging users to engage with it first thing in the morning, similar to their daily routine with social media or news apps.

Pulse provides users with a series of five to ten briefs, designed to quickly bring them up to speed on the day’s events. This feature is part of OpenAI’s broader initiative to design consumer products that work asynchronously, catering to user needs beyond immediate query responses. By doing so, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as more of an assistant than a traditional chatbot.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s new CEO of Applications, expressed that this development aims to democratize the level of support typically reserved for the wealthy, making it accessible to all users over time. Initially available to Pro users on a $200-a-month subscription plan, Pulse is set to expand to all users in the future, pending efficiency improvements.

Pulse’s functionality includes compiling news roundups on specific topics, such as updates on sports teams, and creating personalized briefs based on user data. During a demonstration, OpenAI’s product lead, Adam Fry, showcased reports including news about a soccer team, costume suggestions, and travel itineraries, all presented as interactive cards with AI-generated images and text.

Users can request new automated reports and provide feedback on existing ones. Notably, Pulse intentionally limits engagement by stopping after generating a few reports, distinguishing it from engagement-driven social media platforms.

Additionally, Pulse integrates with apps like Google Calendar and Gmail, enabling it to highlight important emails and create agendas for upcoming events. It can also incorporate context from previous ChatGPT interactions to enhance report accuracy and relevance.

While Pulse competes with existing news services, it maintains transparency by citing sources with links. Looking ahead, OpenAI aims to enhance Pulse’s capabilities, potentially allowing it to make reservations or draft emails on behalf of users, although such features remain in development.
