OpenAI Launches Stargate Norway: A Major AI Data Center in Europe
OpenAI has announced the launch of Stargate Norway, its inaugural AI data center in Europe, in collaboration with British AI cloud infrastructure provider Nscale and Norwegian energy firm Aker. The site, which will be a 50/50 joint venture between Nscale and Aker, signifies a pivotal step in Europe’s race to strengthen AI sovereignty and enhance its compute power.
The Stargate Norway project will initially provide 230 MW capacity, with a vision to expand to 290 MW, powered by 100,000 Nvidia GPUs by the end of 2026. Located near Narvik, Norway, the center will leverage the region’s abundant hydropower, cool climate, and robust industrial base to operate entirely on renewable energy.
In line with environmental directives, the facility plans to utilize closed-loop, direct-to-chip liquid cooling for optimal efficiency and will channel excess heat to support local low-carbon enterprises. This initiative aligns with Europe’s broader AI infrastructure goals, as it seeks to achieve data sovereignty and environmental sustainability.
Norway’s AI ecosystem, including startups and scientific communities, will benefit from priority access to the center, fostering innovation and growth within the region. The project underscores Europe’s commitment to advancing its technological infrastructure while adhering to stringent environmental standards.
