OpenAI Acquires Sky: Revolutionizing AI on Mac Platforms

In a groundbreaking move, OpenAI has acquired Software Applications, Inc., the creators of an innovative AI-powered interface for Mac computers known as Sky. Designed to seamlessly integrate with various applications, Sky offers users a dynamic way to enhance their productivity through writing, planning, coding, and more.

Sky functions similarly to AI browsers by analyzing on-screen content and executing tasks within applications autonomously. This acquisition represents a significant stride in embedding OpenAI’s advanced technology into the daily workflows of individuals and businesses operating on Mac.

The creators of Sky, who have a history of successful tech ventures, expressed their enthusiasm for joining OpenAI. Ari Weinstein, co-founder and CEO of Software Applications, remarked, “With LLMs, we can finally put the pieces together. That’s why we built Sky, an AI experience that floats over your desktop to help you think and create. We’re thrilled to join OpenAI to bring that vision to hundreds of millions of people.”

The team behind Sky has a prestigious background, having previously co-founded a technology that evolved into the widely used Apple Shortcuts. Their expertise extends to working on various Apple technologies, such as Safari and FaceTime, which adds a layer of credibility and experience to this new venture.

Apple, though lagging behind in AI advancements, is expected to introduce an upgraded Siri with enhanced AI functionalities. Currently, Apple employs its AI technology, known as Apple Intelligence, across its platforms to support features like live translation and visual search. However, privacy concerns may arise with the advent of agentic AI systems like Sky, which can view screens and perform tasks for users.

While the financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed, it is known that Sky had previously secured $6.5 million from notable investors, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The deal was orchestrated by Nick Turley and Fidji Simo, leading figures at OpenAI, and received approval from the company’s board.

This acquisition is poised to revolutionize how users interact with their Mac devices, offering a more intuitive and efficient computing experience driven by OpenAI’s cutting-edge technology.
