Introducing Lumo: Proton’s Privacy-First AI Assistant

Proton, a renowned name in privacy-focused productivity tools, has unveiled its AI assistant, Lumo, which emphasizes the protection of user data. Lumo offers a unique user experience by ensuring no logs of conversations are kept, implementing end-to-end encryption for chat storage, and providing a ‘ghost mode’ where conversations vanish once the window is closed.

Lumo is accessible via various platforms, including a web interface and mobile apps, making it user-friendly and versatile. Notably, users do not need to create an account to interact with the chatbot. Additionally, files can be uploaded for the chatbot to process and respond to queries. For those with a Proton account, Lumo can integrate with cloud storage for enhanced functionality.

Despite having web access, Lumo might not retrieve the most up-to-date search results, as Proton’s primary focus is privacy. The company has committed to using open-source models for research and development without leveraging user data for training, a significant step towards transparency and user trust.

Lumo uses zero-access encryption, a method Proton employs across its products, allowing users to securely store their conversation history, which can only be decrypted on their devices. Proton highlights its European base as a strategic advantage in privacy, distinguishing itself from U.S. and Chinese AI firms.

Proton’s statement emphasizes, “Lumo is based on open-source language models and operates from Proton’s European datacenters, offering greater transparency than other major AI assistants. Unlike partnerships with OpenAI or similar entities, your queries with Lumo are never shared with third parties.”

This launch marks Proton’s continued innovation in AI, building on previous developments in privacy-centric tools. With Lumo, Proton reinforces its commitment to privacy while expanding its technological offerings.
