The National Quantum Mission, launched in 2023, aims to develop intermediate-scale quantum computers with 50 to 1,000 physical qubits within eight years. This ambitious initiative encompasses a wide array of platforms, including superconducting qubits and photonics, and extends to satellite-based quantum communications, multi-node quantum networks, and advanced material synthesis.

Among the beneficiaries of this strategic push is QpiAI, an Indian startup that has successfully integrated AI with quantum computing. With a recent infusion of $32 million in funding, co-led by the Indian government and Avataar Ventures, QpiAI is poised to expand its operations and develop utility-scale quantum computers for global markets.

QpiAI’s groundbreaking work in building India’s first full-stack quantum computer, equipped with 25 superconducting qubits, showcases the potential of combining AI and quantum computing for optimization in various sectors. The startup’s focus on real-world applications such as materials science and drug discovery underscores the transformative impact of quantum technology.

Looking ahead, QpiAI plans to launch a 64-qubit quantum computer and begin local manufacturing of its quantum hardware by 2026. The company’s growth strategy includes entering new markets like Singapore and the Middle East, further solidifying India’s position as a hub for quantum innovation.

India’s quantum journey extends beyond individual startups, with the National Quantum Mission supporting a diverse range of companies specializing in quantum-safe networks, cryogenic systems, and advanced sensing materials.
