Google Expands AI Note-Taking App to Younger Students

Google has recently expanded access to its AI note-taking app, NotebookLM, to younger users. Previously restricted to users 18 and older, the app is now open to Google Workspace for Education users of any age and consumers ages 13 and up. This change aims to equip younger students with advanced AI tools to enhance their understanding of educational materials.

NotebookLM offers features designed to transform the learning experience. Students can convert their notes into engaging audio overviews, create interactive mind maps for visual learning, and turn notes, PDFs, and images into dynamic visual presentations. Despite the benefits, the expansion comes amid concerns about AI use in education, particularly regarding data privacy and potential misuse. To address these issues, Google has implemented stricter content policies for users under 18, ensuring that inappropriate content is filtered out. Additionally, user interactions and uploads are not reviewed by humans nor used for AI training, safeguarding student privacy.
