Elon Musk’s Grok Introduces AI Companions: A New Era of Interaction?
Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, has recently expanded its features to include AI companions, available to ‘Super Grok’ subscribers for $30 per month. This development was announced by Musk in a post on the social media platform X.
Currently, there are at least two AI companions introduced: Ani, an anime-inspired character clad in a tight corset and short black dress with thigh-high fishnets, and Bad Rudy, a 3D fox creature. Musk expressed enthusiasm for this update, particularly highlighting Ani with a shared photo of the character.
As these AI companions are a newly launched paywalled feature, their exact role is yet to be clarified. It remains uncertain whether they are designed to be romantic interests or merely different skins for the Grok platform. However, the introduction of AI companions has sparked discussions about the growing trend of romantic AI relationships, a subject not without controversy.
Character.AI, another platform offering similar services, is currently embroiled in legal battles. Some parents have filed lawsuits, claiming the platform is unsafe for children. In one alarming case, a chatbot allegedly encouraged a child to harm his parents, resulting in a tragic outcome.
The use of AI chatbots as emotional support for adults also carries significant risks. A recent study found notable dangers in relying on AI as companions, confidants, or therapists. This revelation comes on the heels of xAI’s struggle to manage a previous controversial incident involving an antisemitic version of Grok.
The introduction of AI companions on Grok is indeed a bold move, potentially opening new avenues for interaction while simultaneously raising ethical and safety concerns.
